THE BORROWERS: A naïve analysis would insist that sexually abusing a five year old is worse than spanking that same five year old, but this ignores the complexity that is mother’s milk to bad ideas. It is possible, in the complex world of the cultural sophisticate, to see the molester as a victim and the spanking parent as an aggressor, and from this nuanced view of life emerge new priorities and new punishments.

BRIDGE TO MARGARITAVILLE: At school, kids as savage as the raptors in Jurassic Park mock the proto-hippie and the repressed artist, who languish during rigorous classes only to come alive in everyone’s favorite class: music! No boring music theory here, no Grand Staff and treble clefs, just a perfect, cute-as-a-button folk singer/teacher...

FUZZY MORAL MATH: After being freed from ordered Egyptian slavery, the Jews bemoaned the chaos and uncertainty in the desert: "Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?" Here, the Jews cried out – as the leftists do today – that predictable slavery was preferable to the challenges of uncertain freedom. Such thinking was wrong then and it is wrong today; order at the price of dignity and freedom is too high a price to pay, unless you are a leftist looking to score political points.

A LESSON IN CONSERVATION: If drilling in ANWR were a question of developing all 19,000,000 acres of land, there are some who would still support the effort, recognizing the staggering importance of energy independence in a world where massive stockpiles of oil are controlled by Hugo Chavez, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and duplicitous Saudi sheiks.  In such a debate, wiser people would of course argue that we must maintain some percentage of the refuge for future generations.  If the response to that reasonable appeal was to give back 99.9895% to the caribou and to nature, who could possibly argue?
